When the old becomes new

Let's face it: every once in a while we feel bored. Things are not as interesting as they used to be. Routine becomes more evident and we crave change. We start looking for new things to do as if the new things had the power to eliminate boredom once and for all.

I had a very interesting conversation with a good old friend and he said: "I realized that the possibility of doing something new is not in what we do but in how we do it". Jesus... Isn't that the absolute truth? Whenever we feel bored we look for new stuff: a new job, new activities, a new partner. However we continue to do things the old way. We start something new and exciting and 4 months later we are bored to death once again. The search begins one more time and the cycle never ends.

How about looking at everything that surrounds us in a different way? It is definitely more work. It is much easier to believe that the "new" and "exciting" is somewhere out there. It is not your responsibility. Transforming the "old" into "new" requires that you change your outlook on life. It challenges you to look for new possibilities and new ways of doing the trivial. All of a sudden, it becomes your responsibility.

I am not trying to say that new is bad. New is great. We should always be open to possibility. The point I am trying to make is that some of the old that is part of our lives is also great. However, it needs to be renewed, revitalized, reinvented, refreshed. It is really up to us to find newness in everything we do or to continue to do do everything the old-fashioned way.
